The Better Business Bureau stated that one type of scam targets gift cards that have not yet been purchased. The scammer went to the gift card shelf to scratch and photograph the code. Then, they kept making 800 calls related to the card, until they found that someone had purchased the card and recharged it, they quickly spent the money in the card before the recipient used the card.

Steve Bernas, chief executive of the Chicago Better Business Bureau, said: “Scammers have discovered that this is a new way to extract money from consumers who don’t I don’t know the pitfalls of gift card shopping.”

Another gift card scam is this: You will receive a Facebook message or a call from someone you think you know. They may pretend to be members of a utility company. They say they need money, or you have an unpaid bill, and they ask you to transfer the money to them by buying a gift card. When you buy a gift card, the scammer will ask you for the card number, including the password hidden under the scratched coating. Then they cashed out the gift card money and disappeared.

There is also a third way for criminals to use gift cards. They can spend stolen debit or credit cards without leaving too many traces. Detective William Heneghan of the Financial Crimes Department of the Chicago Police Department said they recently arrested two women, 26-year-old Tiana Trammell and 32-year-old Tewana. Rainey (Tjwana Rainey), charged with running a financial crime company.

Henigan said that Trammel and Renee would run into men in a bar in River North. They stole their credit cards and bought gift cards. The victims of this scam lost between 8,000 and 10,000 dollars each.

Now, retail stores are becoming more and more vigilant about gift card fraud and taking additional measures to protect customers. CVS is training employees to be vigilant and requires customers to read and confirm information about gift card fraud at the cashier before completing a purchase.
